Future Coaches Academy Pilot SWHS strengthens relationships with Pine Shadows and Westwood

Athletics and Health Fitness has officially launched its second year of the Advanced Movers Initiative, and one of the "goals" for the second year was to launch a Future Coaches Academy. The main focus behind this is to build on the strengths and gifts of our current students who want to be coaches/teachers and help develop and equip them to be successful coaches in the future. The hope is also that they would come back to SBISD to coach for us when they graduate high school.

Spring Woods High School's boys and girls soccer teams have helped lay some of the groundwork for creating the "Future Coaches Academy". These students demonstrated dedication and commitment by sacrificing their time to both Westwood and Pine Shadows every Tuesday from 3:30pm-4:30pm. They came to coach and teach our students the fundamentals skills of soccer. They did this over the course of 9 weeks, and never missed a practice session. One of the student athletes even shared that "they wish when they were this age that they would have had someone to train them, so the fact that we have this opportunity this is why I love doing this".
Future Coaches Academy Coaching the students over 9 weeks
On Tuesday, November 19th, Spring Woods High School boys and girls soccer clubs provided an opportunity for "Future Tiger" 4th and 5th grade advanced movers from Pine Shadows and Westwood elementary to come meet their future teammates on the field at Spring Woods High School. They got the chance to put all the skills and fundamental movements of soccer that their Coaches from high school taught them over the last 9 weeks in a scrimmage with each other.

The girls game was first followed by a halftime show that was organized by the "Future Coaches Academy." The halftime show consisted of the different clubs within SWHS that our students will have the choice of participating in at the high school level.

They had the cheerleaders, Tigerettes, Drum Line, Color Guard, and ALAS who came out to support this student driven event.

The boys then played in their scrimmage with their future teammates. The community was invited out to this main event complimentary of SWHS, and even had the opportunity to grab some BBQ made by the students. The "Future Coaches Academy" hosted an amazing event this evening, and were very organized and professional. One of the student athlete coaches told Coach Yaya, "I have a new found respect for all that you have to do to prepare for an event"

Their hard work and efforts will pay off in the future, because they made a huge impact on these students which can only be seen in the years to come.

Advanced Movers on the Field at Tully

On Saturday, Nov. 9, more than 550 students from nine elementary and three middle schools in the Spring Woods and Northbrook high schools feeder patterns visited Tully Stadium and had a special opportunity to walk around the football field and run through their high school’s mascot run-through inflatable that is used by the football teams.
The special stadium visit was organized as part of the district’s Advanced Movers program led by the Health Fitness Department and supported by the district athletics department. Students from the following campuses took part: Buffalo Creek, Edgewood, Hollibrook, Housman, Pine Shadows, Ridgecrest, Spring Branch, Westwood and Woodview elementary schools. Landrum, Northbrook and Spring Woods middle schools took part, too, including middle school athletes wearing team jerseys.
“As part of our Advanced Movers Initiative, we are trying to provide access to extracurricular and recreational opportunities that our students may not otherwise get without these types of events being put on,” said Westwood Elementary’s Samuel Karns.

“The purpose and intent behind this event was to expose students to the variety of opportunities that they will have access to when they reach high school. The students got to stand on the field in their respective feeder patterns, and walk or run through the jumbo blow-up mascots with the schools they will go to when they are older. This helps plant the seed of higher education at the secondary level, and motivates them to work hard now,” Karns also said.
The visit coincided with an afternoon Spring Woods-Northbrook football game. Students were recognized for their attendance and support on the stadium speakers.
“For many of our students, this was their first time to ever go to Tully Stadium and see football played at the high school level. For many others, it was the first time to hear a band, or observe cheerleader routines, and the drum line,” Karns also said. “It was an amazing day.”

Northbrook Middle invites Advanced Movers for some Volleyball Action

November 6th was a huge day for Northbrook Middle as they went head to head in volleyball against Landrum . For these girls it was their last game of the season and with that being said they wanted to leave their imprint on the future Lady Knights in the years to come.

Coach Karen Price invited all elementary schools within Northbrook Middle School's feeder pattern for an opportunity to come and support the Lady Knights in their last game of the season.

Hollibrook Elementary's Advanced Movers seemed to be in for a special treat this night, because the Lady Knights provided a volleyball skills training session where they taught the younger students how to bump, set and volley.

Relationships were built and strengthened this day for all students involved. The seed of playing volleyball for Northbrook Middle School was planted this evening in the minds of all advanced movers.

"Advanced Movers" puts T-2-4 into action again!!

This past Friday the Houston Baptist Huskies hosted a double header in soccer for both men and women. The women went head to head with Sam Houston University and the men faced off against Seattle University.

SBISD students were invited out in support of our district's T-2-4 initiative of promoting higher education. For many of our students this was their first exposure to HBU, and for some their first time ever to set foot on a College Campus. Over 100 students from 3 elementary campuses were in attendance at this event, and these schools were Hollibrook, Pine Shadows, and Westwood Elementary.

The student's hard work of maintaining good grades and good behavior paid off big for them as they enjoyed the opportunity they got to visit HBU and witness a high intensity soccer game at the collegiate level. One 4th grade student even posted on her edmodo blog "I want to be good at soccer just like they are"

SBISD was recognized at the end of the first half of the men's soccer game, and 6 students were invited to dribble the soccer ball from midfield and shoot a goal on the Huskies side.
