L.I.O.N Program meets Westwood Elementary

L.I.O.N (Lifesavers In Our Neighborhood) has kicked off for the third consecutive year. This program allows Sports Medicine II students from Spring Woods High School to come over to their feeder pattern elementary, Westwood Elementary to teach their 5th graders about a variety of different health topics relating to the field of Sports Medicine. This year the program has expanded and is now serving another school within their feeder pattern, which is Pine Shadows.

The class is led by Cathlene Webb and Tyra Harrell who are Athletic Trainers as well as the Sports Medicine instructors for Spring Woods High School. They work with their Sports Medicine II class to develop a lesson. They then travel over to Westwood and Pine Shadows Elementary once a month to serve as coaches/teachers and deliver a lesson for 5th grade students in the field of Sports Medicine.

Emergency Action Plans
Today the Sports Medicine II students taught the Westwood 5th graders a variety of mini-lessons regarding Emergency Action Plans. This included the proper technique for using a spine board, as well as the correct procedures for using an AED and what to expect if it has to be used. The students were engaged, and were provided a handout to help them create a Family Communication Plan in case of an emergency.
