SPRING BRANCH ISD STUDENT ATHLETIC TRAINING WORKSHOP

SPRING BRANCH ISD STUDENT ATHLETIC TRAINING WORKSHOP

On March 21, 2013, in conjunction with National Athletic Training Month and Licensed Athletic Training Day in Texas, the SBISD Sports Medicine Department sponsored the fourth Annual Student Athletic Training Workshop at the Tully/Coleman Complex.

Approximately 80 students enrolled in our four year comprehensive Sports Medicine Program from Memorial High School, Northbrook High School, Stratford High School and Spring Woods High School participated.

In addition to those students, five Westwood Elementary School students who are affiliated with the Spring Woods High School L.I.O.N ( Lifesavers In Our Neighborhood)Community Outreach Program attended.

The purpose of this workshop: to promote the profession, fine tune student athletic training skills, and enhance camaraderie between campuses.

Student Athletic Trainers receive a head start in content mastery of: anatomy/physiology; psychology of sport and injury; injury recognition and evaluation; injury prevention; injury care; career opportunities; professional liability and responsibilities; and budget & facility design.

Our keynote speaker was the Assistant Athletic Trainer for the Houston Texans, A.J. Van Valkenburgh. He spoke directly with our students about goal setting, educational options and his personal professional athletic training experiences.

This year we awarded five deserving graduating seniors Post-Secondary Scholarships sponsored by Memorial Hermann. We are very proud of our students and are anxiously waiting to see what careers they will pursue.

We greatly appreciate Paige Hershey, SBISD Athletics Department, Memorial Hermann Ironman Institute, Methodist Sports Medicine, Village Family Practice, The Orthopedic Sports Clinic, Athletic Orthopedics and Knee Center and Houston Texans Assistant Athletic Trainer A.J. Van Valkenburgh for their time and effort in helping make this event a success.

Thank you to everyone for supporting our innovative programs!!
